Altaee MY, Johnson PJ, Farrant JM, Williams R (1991) Etiologic and clinical characteristics of peripheral and hilar cholangiocarcinoma. Cancer, 68(9):2051-2055
Abstract: Prolonged high alcohol consumption was a prominent feature in both categories (45% and 37%, respectively). Among the women, 35% of those with the peripheral tumor had used oral contraceptive preparations.
Discussion
Recent figures suggest that approximately 17% of the adult British population drink more than the recommended weekly alcohol limit of 30 g for men and 20g for women.
The high recurrence rate after orthotopic liver transplantation for both peripheral and hilar types3’ is in agreement with other centers3’ That tumor recurrence occurs even with intraduct tumors (Klatskin) that at the time of presentation are still small, which suggests that either micrometastases are present from an early stage or that tumor cells are disseminated at the time of surgery. Most patients underwent several different types of therapy, and this multiplicity of approaches attests to the failure of any to have any major effect on survival.
